Bio

Kala has spent her entire professional career in school public relations. She began as a communication specialist for Papillion La Vista Community Schools. While there she lead the implementation of social media, the roll-out of a district wide app, two website redesigns and rebranded the district in 2015-2016.  During her tenure at PLCS, Kala was a member of the inaugural NSPRA 35 under 35 class, was named a NSPRA Front Runner and won numerous communications publication awards from NSPRA. 

In March 2016, Kala became the Coordinator of Marketing and Visual Information for Omaha Public Schools, the largest school district in Nebraska. During her time at OPS she has helped to re-launch the district brand, change the previously negative narrative to positive, increase staff engagement and more.  In 2018, her team received a Gold Medallion for their brand re-launch work.  In 2021, Kala was promoted to the Director of Communications for Omaha Public Schools. As the director, she develops the communications plan and strategy for a district of over 54,000 students. She leads the crisis communication strategy and has overseen the launch of a new mass communication platform and website for the district and all schools.  

Kala was a previous chapter officer for NebSPRA. She has served as President, Vice President and is currently the treasurer.

Kala has bachelor's degree in Business Marketing and Journalism and Mass Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations from Iowa State University. She also holds a master's degree in Communications from University of Nebraska at Omaha. 

When not at work, Kala enjoys traveling, home remodeling and cheering her two children on in their various activities.
